Beginning around 1872 the Ridgeway Brothers began producing quality earthenware in Shelton, Staffordshire England. Their factories produced a plethora of different types of pottery, with one of the branches producing a line called Coaching Days & Coaching Ways, depicting the illustrated scenes from the book of the same name written by W. Oustram Tristram in 1888. This series was created on an amber brown transferware pottery with black transfers and was made from the 1890s to the 1920s. The illustrations depict scenes from the old English stagecoach roads and the collection included all types of pottery – from plates and mugs to dishes and vases. All items in this collection will be stamped “Scenes from Coaching Days & Coaching ways by Special permission of Macmillan & Co Ltd, Ridgeway England”. Macmillan & Co refers to a book publisher in London who owned the copyrights of the illustrations. Crazing can be expected not only due to the age but the type of glaze used when firing. This lovely plate has the silver luster rim, and illustrates the scene “clandestine Interview”, perhaps a secret meeting between lovers? This plate is in excellent condition with no visible damage or cracks. C1910, made in England, measures 8 inches around.
