This handsome jacket has military roots for sure, and the handsome golden eagle buttons are stamped J.R. Gaunt & Son New York which dates them close to WWI, but with no labels or tags it is hard to pinpoint which branch it represents. It was found with items from the 1920’s to 1930s timeframe so it is safe to assume it is pre-1930s, and it has been modified slightly with the buttons moved out to accommodate a larger person (hence the top button is actually missing). Superb quality black wool fabric with satin lining, high-low cut (reminisce of officer’s dress), structured shoulders, short collar with wide notched lapel, gold military buttons (JR Gaunt), front flap/buttoned chest pockets and hip pockets, high split seam in back with longer tails, reinforced arm pits and 2 interior buttons that I do not know the purpose of. There was rice found in the front pockets so this may have been worn at a military wedding. No marked size but fits like a small, excellent condition with no holes or fabric damage, c1920s. The following measurements were taken with the garment lying FLAT and recorded in inches, please be sure and DOUBLE the appropriate measurements: Shoulders: 17, chest: 19, waist: 17 ½, length front; 22 ½, length back: 30, sleeve: 24 ½.
