Where does one begin with such a beautiful and timeless piece of American history? The carriage robe, also called the lap robe, was manufactured by Sanford Mills in Sanford, Maine by Thomas Goodall. Goodall perfected the looming of mohair so it was stenciled rather than woven, and this allowed such stunning patterns like the ones on this blanket to really pop and stay the test of time. Carriage robes were designed for the cold carriage rides of the Victorian era and were very heavy so they did not fly out – they were also used in the early automobiles as they did not have heaters. This is an amazing piece of Americana Heritage and is in fabulous condition. Soft plush mohair in rich brown with a playful cat and dog in front of a picture window with horizontal light stripes throughout to give the impression of sunlight coming through the window, gold and brown border, bright teal color in the window image. Wool and horsehair lining, lightly weighted corners, this blanket is heavy and super warm. Chase label in corner, made in USA, circa 1910, measures 60 x 48.
