C.B. Newhouse was an artist and traveler, and illustrated his own scenes from the road (1834-1835) with eighteen aquatints in the series he called Scenes on the Road/Mail Coach Adventures. This engraving is from plate 1 of the series and titled “The Disappointment or Retreat in a Shower” and shows a lady rider and her groomsmen who get caught in a rain shower and are asking the mail coach if they will let the mistress ride for a couple of miles to get out of the wet – to no avail, as they have ruined three bucks already! Published in March 1835, London, Tho. McLean. This is an exceptional and rare piece that is usually only found in the UK and the series in book form has a price of over $6,000. The edges of the print are a little yellow with age and there is a small tear on the lower right corner; the matting is a bit yellowed as well, but the colors are amazingly vivid and the detail is outstanding. Presented in a simple wood frame with red and gold trim. Print measures approximately 11x15 and framed size is 19 ¾ x 16 inches.
