The A. Schoenhut Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1872 by Albert Schoenhut, who immigrated with his family to the United Stated from Germany in the 1860s. Albert began by making toy pianos and soon expanded to other toys, dolls and circus figurines. This horse is from the Humpty Dumpty Circus which was produced by Schoenhut in various styles between 1903 and 1935. This collection was extremely popular and collectors can still find many surviving pieces. This particular piece is a Schoenhut toy made in the USA in the early 1900s; Starting in the early 1950s many of the Schoenhut toys were made in West Germany. This horse is in good condition with all the strings still attached, though they could use a little tightening from the person who knows what they are doing! Carved out of wood and hand painted, missing the original saddle, in good condition with the following note: There is a piece of the right front hoof that has been broken. Made in USA, early 1900s, measures 10 inches long x 7 ½ inches tall by 2 ½ inches wide.
