This is a stunning statue depicting the Spanish Andalusian horse from the region of Andaluca. This breed is known as the royal horse of Europe because they were ridden by kings and royalty, highly coveted for their fluid high-stepping movement and smooth gaits. They are also bred for bull fighting, and perhaps the red robes on this piece signifies the horse’s role in this blood sport. This piece is very heavy (20+ lbs) and appears to have been painted in a gray color that has patina’d with age, red saddle and flowing drapery + tassled relief trim, wonderful sculptural detail and posed in the Spanish Walk these horses are so well known for. Dark wooden base (not sure if this is original or was added at a later date), excellent condition. No stamps or marks, circa 1950s.
Oval base measures 7 x10 ½ x 1 inch, horse measures 15 inches long x 12 ¼ inches high x 5 inches wide.
