Royal Doulton produced many collections depicting fox hunting in 19th and 20th centuries as it was extremely popular up until the 1950s with the gentile or affluent circles; actually, it is still popular today with equine enthusiasts but certainly not in the numbers seen 100+ years ago. This fabulous plate shows the hunt startling a ploughman and his horse and is Plate No 4 (out of 6 images) in the Fox Hunting “A”, Series A (pattern D5104 that was introduced in 1931 and ran through 1950). This plate has two marks to confirm the age: The first mark is the small number next to the maker’s mark (13) –the base year is 1927 and you add this number to the base and you get 1940; the plate also has an impression of 1 40, meaning January 1940. Full viewing image with green trim on rim, lovely fall colors of yellow/brown/rust. Excellent condition with no crazing, c1940, made in England. Measures 10 ¼ inches.
