Most of these lovely bookends were made in Japan and exported in the 1950s and 1960s, and you find them at a lot of antique malls and vintage stores all over the world. Those that have survived are highly collectible and this particular horse head with stylized horseshoe was prevalent in the 1950s. Meant to be filled with sand for heft, because they were made of such fine bisque porcelain many did not survive the simple filling! Although the mate to this is missing, it is no less a beautiful décor piece for your library or home office. Bay horse with gold and red colors, no manufacturer’s stamps or marks, c 1950s.
