London-born John Frederick Herring Sr was a painter, sign-maker & Coachman in Victorian England (1795-1865); he amended his signature SR (Senior) in 1836 with the growing fame of his teenage son, John Frederick Herring Jr. Herring is one of the more prolific equestrian painters of the mid-nineteenth century with his portraits Derby winners particularly well-known. His horse portraits were very popular with the gentry, or upper-class, race horse and hunting horse owners, and his style is recognizable around the world – delicate, statuesque horses with refined heads and glossy coats. This print is of Derby winner Camel from 1844, walnut wood framed under glass with a black/charcoal houndstooth-patterned mat and single saw-tooth hanger on back. Excellent condition, c 1980s, measures 21 ½ x 18 ½ inches.
